HORIZONTAL MOTION INDEX ( HMI ) LEGEND: Ec = [Ctrl] [P] [Esc] in DOS EDIT HORIZONTAL MOTION INDEX The Horizontal Motion Index ( HMI ) escape sequence will allow you to adjust the horizontal character spacing of your fonts by placing the characters closer together or further apart. HMI will not alter the point size of your fonts. The HMI command should always be sent after any page orientation command. Changes in the default left or right margin will result in a change to the default horizontal printable area. To invoke the HMI mode, type Ec&k#H. The # sign designates a variable that is derived from the following formula. (Horizontal Printable Area/Desired Characters per Line) X 120 = # Or: If you know the desired pitch or number of characters per horizontal inch, use the following formula. (120/Desired Characters per Inch) = # HORIZONTAL PRINTABLE AREA DEFAULTS 1) portrait letter (8-1/2 x 11) = 8 inches 2) portrait legal (8-1/2 x 14) = 8 inches 3) landscape letter (11 x 8-1/2) = 10.5 inches 4) landscape legal (14 x 8-1/2) = 13.5 inches Example: To designate 88 characters per line on letter sized paper, portrait orientation, using the default 10 pitch Courier font.
