HORIZONTAL MOTION INDEX ( HMI )

LEGEND: Ec = [Ctrl] [P] [Esc] in DOS EDIT

  HORIZONTAL MOTION INDEX

The Horizontal Motion Index ( HMI ) escape sequence
will allow you to adjust the horizontal character
spacing of your fonts by placing the characters closer
together or further apart. HMI will not alter the
     point size of your fonts.

The HMI command should always be sent after any page
orientation command. Changes in the default left or
right margin will result in a change to the default
     horizontal printable area.

To invoke the HMI mode, type Ec&k#H. The # sign
designates a variable that is derived from the
     following formula.

(Horizontal Printable Area/Desired Characters per Line)
     X 120 = #

Or: If you know the desired pitch or number of
characters per horizontal inch, use the following
          formula.

     (120/Desired Characters per Inch) = #

  HORIZONTAL PRINTABLE AREA DEFAULTS

     1) portrait letter (8-1/2 x 11) = 8 inches
     2) portrait legal (8-1/2 x 14) = 8 inches

     4) landscape legal (14 x 8-1/2) = 13.5 inches

Example: To designate 88 characters per line on
                 letter sized paper, portrait orientation,
using the default 10 pitch Courier font.

                 (8 inches/88 characters) X 120 = 10.91
                 Ec&k10.91H
