Notes from Glen Newton from Dorothy Newton about the wedding of this couple:

Jim and Zola were married at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 1963, at the Waverly Chapel in Santa Ana, California. I (16 years old) served as best man, and Joy, one of Zola's siblings (28 years old), was maid of honor. David was unable to get off work to come to the wedding. Mom was the organist after the original organist developed a pinched nerve and her arm would go numb. Mom's note about the car in the picture says, "Bill Lauer who had his Classic Packard. Bill drove Jim and Zola to their hidden car and they went away."

More about the wedding day from Mom's diary:

Jim called Mom at 11:45 to tell her about the organist's pinched nerve. By 12:50 we were at the chapel for the 1 p.m. rehearsal.

Jim and I rented suits in Santa Ana "($8 an outfit for everything except shoes, sox & underwear)". Dad and Mom wore clothes they'd brought from home. Mom's outfit was a Nassau cream dress, with white hat and gloves, cream-colored dyed shoes, and blue beads and earrings. She waited until the reception after the wedding to don her hat, gloves and shoes.

The chapel's electronic organ had two manuals and pedals. When Jim first discussed the wedding ceremony with Mom before our drive to California, he'd asked her to play the organ, but she declined because she thought it would be better for her to just be the mother of the groom. However, just to be prepared for an emergency, Mom had brought along some organ music. She played Bach, Clokey, etc., for the prelude, then Wagner (the "Here comes the bride" wedding march from Lohengrin) for the processional and Purcell's Trumpet Tune and Air for the recessional. The preacher's wife sang "Oh, Promise Me" and during the ceremony "Wedding Prayer".

The day before, "there was a surprise shower given by three departments for Zola and Jim. The present was a 3-piece Corning Ware casserole set and a fry-pan with lids and handle."

Mom recorded this on May 27: "This pm, rec'd a letter from Jim saying 'During the past several months I have been seeing a very nice girl & have so enjoyed her company that I have decided to arrange for a permanent relationship.' Name is Zola Marney, farm family, few yrs. older than Jim. [Jim was 28; Zola was 36.] ... Said he was negotiating for a better position with more pay."

Jim was successful in his negotiations at Hughes. On June 18, Mom recorded, "This morning Jim said he got a $12 a week raise & thinks he is now the head of the photo-resist department because he's the only one that knows about some of the processes."

Mom, Dad, and I drove to California, taking the southern route on the way out (2547 miles, through Bloomington, IL; Joplin, MO; Amarillo, TX; Holbrook, AZ; Blythe, CA). We left early in the morning on June 10 and got to Jim's house in Costa Mesa on just before noon on Saturday, June 15. Mom's notes from June 15 include, "He was sun bathing on cot outside. He's very thin - 135 lbs. but says he's OK except for a cold. Met Zola - she's very nice, soft-spoken, efficient, & in love with Jim. Reddish hair worn long around shoulders. ... During afternoon Jim, Glen, & I had lots of fun playing - Jim on sax, flute, trumpet. Glen on trumpet, guitar. Me on electric organ."

While visiting, we did a lot of sightseeing - Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach art gallery, etc.

Our drive back was June 24-28. We took the northern route on the way back (26xx miles, through Cedar City, UT after passing a corner of Arizona; heard organ concert at Morman Tabernacle and looked around the grounds and museum in Salt Lake City; Little America, WY; North Platte, NE; Mt Pleasant, IA; and home to Big Rapids, MI, about 7 pm). Mom's diary entry says, "Cost of whole thing was only $435 (We had thought $600 would be sufficient.) 20 days = $21.75 a day for all three of us."
