DISKCOPY + Copying Disks

Copies disks; optionally formats the target disk also.

PC-DOS 2.0+ (revised from 1.1)

MS-DOS equivalent: DISKCOPY (2.0+)

[d:][path] DISKCOPY [sd: [td:]] [/1]

[d:][path] Specifies the drive letter and path that

contain the DISKCOPY command file.

[sd:] Specifies the source drive letter.

Copy complete

The source disk has been copied onto the target disk.

Copy another (Y/N)?

Enter Y to make another copy; otherwise, enter N.

Copying x sectors per track, n side(s)

This message indicates whether one or two sides are being copied

and whether eight or nine sectors are being copied.

Diskette/Drive not compatible

The destination disk or drive is different from the source disk

or drive. You may be trying to copy a double-sided disk to a

single-sided disk, for example. Use the same type of disks and

drives and try again.

Formatting while copying

The target disk is being formatted in the same format as the

source disk.

Insert source diskette in drive x

Insert target diskette in drive y

Insert the appropriate disks in the correct drives.

Incompatible drive types

The first disk and drive are two-sided and the second drive or

disk is one-sided. Use the /1 option.

Make sure a diskette is inserted into

the drive and the door is closed

The drive door is open, or the drive is empty. Close the door or

insert a disk and try again.

Source diskette bad or incompatible

There may be bad sectors in the source disk, or it may not be

compatible with the drive. Check to make sure the disk is of the

type that the drive accepts and try again, or try with a new

Specified drive does not exist,

or is non-removable

The drive you specified is a hard disk or does not exist on your

computer. Check the drive name and try again.

Target diskette may be unusable

There is an unrecoverable read, write, or verify error on the

target disk.

Target diskette unusable

The target disk is dirty or damaged, or the drive is not able to

read all the tracks. Change the disk and try again.

Target write protected

Correct, then strike any key

Insert another non-n-write-protected disk or remove the write-

protection tab; then press any key to continue.

Unrecoverable format error on target

Target diskette unusable

An unrecoverable error occurred; the target disk contains no

usable data. Use a new disk and try again.

Unrecoverable read error on source

Track xx, side yy

Four unsuccessful attempts were made to read data at that

location. DISKCOPY will continue; however, the copy may not be

Unrecoverable verify error on target

Track xx, side yy

Four unsuccessful attempts were made to verify data at that

location. DISKCOPY will continue; however, the copy may not be

Version 1.0 does not work with double-sided drives. Later

versions automatically check whether the source drive and disk

are single- or double-sided, and make the copy accordingly. Later

versions work with nine sectors per track. The drives used with

DISKCOPY cannot be virtual disks, such as one created by using

the SUBST command. In addition, do not use DISKCOPY when the JOIN

command is in effect. DISKCOPY is not recommended for use with

heavily used disks because it does not reduce fragmentation; use

the COPY command with such disks instead.
