BLDC: Brush Less DC Motors

BLDC motors are basically a combination of Stepper and standard DC motors (with the commutator replaced with electronics and an extra 3rd coil), and are generally efficient, fast, strong at speed, low cost with very long working lives, but do require special drivers. Low resolution position control is possible when combined with sensor feedback from the motor to the driver. Most common 3 pole versions are low torque and need gearing for applications that require force, however, "hoverboard" motors with several poles, can produce significant torque on their own. They all have 3 coils, no matter how many poles they are arranged into. +
