The design is a multi-layer cylindrical inductor, I've been using the
term solenoid since that is also the term my physics book uses, and
lots of other web sites as well. I'm starting to agree with some other
responders that I'm going to have to make some test windings. I've not
been able to find a relative permeability value for chrome steel...

Also, anyone know of a good circuit to measure inductance up to about
40mH? The cirucits I've found so far don't measure that high.
