The PIC16C745 can emulate all the standard USB HID devices directly. The Microchip evaluation board and applications notes include mouse, keyboard and game controller implementations. So, you can get free working code and schematics from the Microchip web site. Yes, it's a pain to used old fashioned EPROM PIC's but I find it easier than hacking the hardware of a USB mouse.
