Didn't EVERYONE say they were going to show at least a small amount of
appreciation for the list *****the list that nobody makes $$ from, but sure
consumes a lot of $$ and effort?!!?*****
So, how many mugs did you say you ordered? Only one?
No one is going to spend more on a new mug design until all the old ones are
sold.....
Besides, the mug guy wants to be paid in cash - cash, what's that?

A big THANK YOU to MIT and Dale, and everyone
else. You guys are great! :o)
Selling mugs and t-shirts is cool but it's unlikely
to ever amount to real compensation for the costs
of running the list. Has anyone considered contacting
Microchip and asking them for contribution??
Surely a few grand here and there would be nothing
for a company of that size, and they could get some
additional value from the list, maybe being able
to add a "daily update" post each day or some other
form of value added advertising on the list. Maybe
an occasional post from a Microchip design guru?
I wonder what percentage of their sales comes either
directly or indirectly through this list? Maybe a
deal could be worked out that really benefits all.

To be honest, I'm surprised they haven't gotten their lawyers involved
with the name PIClist.com. Seriously, this may be a good idea, but I
think it's important for the list to remain independant. I don't own it,
but I don't think Microchip should have total control. Advertising is
another matter however.

Now isn't that exactly the worst possible thing that could happen?
Where's the independence then?
What was the argument against making the PICList a newsgroup? I forgot...

Sigh! Where did I mention losing independence?
I believe that Microchip DO gain significant
benefits from this list existing. Therefore if
the list contacts them it has some negotiating
power. It IS possible to imagine a deal where
the list (and the fiercely independent users) :o)
benefit, and Microchip reap benefits in terms
of additional exposure and security that the
list won't go belly up...

You didn't, of course. It's just that everywhere else in the universe such
collaboration occurs, there is a conflict of interest and things often get
skewed. Say if Microchip had a forum-type discussion group on their web
site, then they would be the moderator of it too, possibly not letting the
less favourable posts appear. But maybe they are uniquely nice guys for a
change.

THere is already a discussion area on the Microchip website so they may not be too interested, but you never know.

I dunno. CCS runs a web forum on their site, and they frequently get
skewered. They do have the right to moderate, but very seldom actually
do.
