While I don't really recommend programmers other than the PICkit2 or PICkit 3, my Olimex MPLAB Compatible ZIF Programmer is up for sale on ebay. It's a good low-cost alternative to JDM-type programmers and other home-brew solutions. This is a current product on the SparkFun website, costing over $90. For older chips it works great! $90 is pretty steep! It seems like they used to charge less for it. Joe
