'[EE:] Camera battery holder'

Hello,

I am still trying to find a battery/holder solution for my 16F877A data
logger system.  After being unable to find a holder for 2 high capacity coin
cells I am leaning toward a 6V camera battery but cannot find an appropriate
holder.  Any ideas?

Thanks,
Nick

What size coin cells were you trying to use at first?

Is this product a commercial offerring or hobby-kit kind of thing?
It makes a difference.

Hard to believe that none of the hundreds of battery holders in DigiKey's
catalog (pp 1124-1126) will do the trick.

For a coin cell or for a camera battery?
I'd agree with you for a coin cell, but I have yet to find battery holders
for 'oddball' batteries
such as lithium camera batteries, sub-C, etc.

I ordered CR2450 from Digikey along with a Keystone 1025 2 cell holder and a
MPD BH1000-G holder and neither would hold 2 CR2450s acceptably.

The CR2450 is a 620mAh battery - In reality I would like to exceed 1Ah but
was trying to make the coin cell idea work for compactness and simplicity.

It's a small-scale commercial offering.  So I need the ability to purchase
in small quantities (~10), yet it needs to be a commercial quality solution.

A battery holder for "normal" cylindrical batteries (like AA) is easy if you
already have a PC board.  Just get battery clips from Keystone and put them
at the appropriate distance for your battery.  The clips are held in place
by the PC board, and they hold the ends of the battery quite firmly in place
while making contact with them.  Another nice feature is that the same part
works for all batteries of the same diameter.  The length is just a function
of how you lay out the clips on the PC board.  They are cheap too.  I've
used the AA clips a bunch of times.

I got my hands on about a dozen of the single holder in a local Radio Shack
clearance. They are available Try Jameco, DigiKey, and Mouser to name a few. I
have seen two cells in the ones like I have but they are just thinnner cells.
No gain there. If you are looking for option, you may want to try some of the
Cordless phone batteries.  most just simple plug into a two pin header. Lots
of power and rechargable.

Just a Thought

Thanks for the input.  I have settled on a 1/2 AA size Lithium Thionyl
Chloride (Tadiran XTRA High Capacity) cell with the appropriate holder in
digikey.  This seems like a pretty PIC friendly solution.  3.6V with a very
pretty discharge curve (long steady voltage with a quick drop at the end of
the life) and rated capacity of 1200mAh designed for long-term low current
operation for 5.09 (10).  This should easily get me over a year of battery
life and the holder should fit my enclosure with room to change the battery
perfectly.

Believe it.  I get most of my parts from DigiKey and have searched through
the paper catalog and on the website and have even tried the best two
contenders and have yet to find the appropriate item.  Thanks though.

Well, at some point, a coin cell battery holder is just an appropriately
sized hole in some material of appropriate thickness, with a contact at
the bottom and a contact at the top, and perhaps some significant
mechanical
retention to keep it all from falling apart.  Maybe it's time to see
what
if  you can resurrect any mechanical engineering skills.  Plexiglass or
PCB material is a reasonable starting point, and you don't even need the
hole to be round.  A hint of triangle should be plenty...
