'[EE]: RS232 to RF'

Hello PIClisters!

Can anyone point me to a small finished module that would allow me to
interface a handheld device that has a serial port via RF? The RF range is
local (about 100 feet / 35 meters). Frequency would need to be appropriate
for a U.S. control device.

A little 9-pin rs232 box would be great. I've found a few RS232/RF solutions
that are not so hand-held. My specific application is for a Palm/Handspring
device.

I think Philips has just announced a Bluetooth module for about $8US (@1500
psc). Haven't checked it out yet. Let us know how it looks.

Try http://www.abacom-tech.com - they've got some RS232 transceivers on US
license-free frequencies, last I checked. I don't think they have DB-9s on
them, but that would be an easy add-on.

Their located in Canada - I think that they get their modules from
Radiometrix in the UK, who have other distributors as well.

I started a list of these - about 20 companies, on my site. Most of
these are ckt boards, not finished modules.

The Laipac devices are quite cheap, $5 USD, but only 3Kbps.

Thanks!

There are many more modules available now than there were even 1 year ago.
The "finished product" version still eludes me. I'm hoping to find a
complete module about the size of a 9-pin d-sub "gender bender" or even
something that attaches directly to a Palm or Visor.

Here are two links I've found in the last few days.

http://www.wirelessmountain.com/unilink.html
http://www.linxtechnologies.com/f_modules.html

I purchased a couple of SC transceivers from Linx Technologies, but haven't
received them yet.  They work on 912Mhz and are good for around 400 ft or
so.  Both are serial in.  I know the SC module also has to have a pin pulled
low for TX and another for RX.  Once I get these up and running as a test, I
will switch to a spread spectrum radio modem, which has MUCH greater range.

Per usual, NO web site I've looked at has any price on those;  I detest
that.  (I don't want to spend hours on hold, then be told a price that's
too expensive - then have some sales droid "stalking" me for the next 6
months trying to talk me into buying those.  I find that rather
flustrating <G>)

Does look like a rather good unit, though!

Do you have a link to info on this module?
I did a search and came up with nothing close.

ZDNet has a page on wireless, & wireless modems, inc buyers guide/etc.

http://www.zdnet.com/special/filters/wireless/

Might try mining it, although the site is an endless series of
mouseclicks and drilldown.
