'[EE] Local tech group live broadcast tonight (Tues'
2009\06\09@154143 by M. Adam Davis

I am doing a smoke test of my little wireless video broadcast setup
tonight at the local tech group's meeting.  If you have a bit of time,
I'd appreciate it if you'd watch for a bit and let me know what
problems you experienced, or whether you found any value in this sort
of thing.

Tonight we will likely have two FIRST robots, a live demonstration of
lost foam metal casting (cheap - 5 gallon bucket furnace, etc), and a
few other shorter presentations.

It starts at 7pm EDT, and should be available here:
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/adam-davis

Typically there are about 30+ people in attendance (perhaps higher
tonight since we're also having a visitor from Make Magazine) and lots
of discussion for the presentations.

I'm going to try to snag someone at the meeting to monitor the ustream
chat and perhaps twitter so you can post your questions and thoughts,
and they may be voiced.

You can get a flavor of the meetings with these videos of past meetings:

http://vimeo.com/videos/search:gotech/sort:newest/format:thumbnail

I apologize in advance if the stream has problems - please keep in
mind this is a smoke test and don't firebomb my house if it doesn't
work...

I've been trying for a while now, using both IE and Opera but keep
getting the following error message: "We're sorry, the page you
requested cannot be found."

I'll keep trying . . .

Vimeo has much better quality than YouTube.

So you're using an HD cam? Or just 16:9 ratio?

Still looking for this.

I went to the link that you gave for the archives and scooped the
group name "gotech" from there, then went and searched ustream for
that name.  I found "http://www.ustream.tv/channel/gotech-ann-arbor"
- it even seems like it might be the right spot: the blurb on the
screen mentions "Live metal casting demonstration".  Oddly, though,
the start time is mentioned as 19:00 PST - you say 7:00 EDT.

I guess I'll look later.

Just letting you know!

Ah, well I may have given the wrong link.  That link usually works for
me, but unfortunately there were numerous problems getting video up
and running - near the end of the meeting I finally gave up and
switched to a handheld webcam, but I doubt the sound quality was good
enough to be usable.

I'll have some of the videos up on Vimeo over the next few weeks, and
I'll try again next month.

Cab you see the difference in between HD, full HD and DVD quality? I am just
curious.

Yes, I'm using a Canon consumer HD camera.  Recording in either 1080p
(1920x1080) or similar (1440x1080).  I just got a larger memory card,
so I should be sticking to the higher resolution from now on.

However, I downconvert to 720p for Vimeo as the files would simply be
too large, and 720p is good for this application.  But that's still
considered HD, so you can see the meetings in HD.

I missed recording the steam powered motorcycle last night, but I got
most of everything else.  Will probably focus on putting the metal
casting up first, but I'll probably edit it as it's a full 30 minutes,
and most of it is waiting for it to heat up, melt the metal, and let
the casting cool.

Hmm, full size or model ???

I see there is a race for 'non carbon emitting' motorcycles, this Friday, at
the Isle of Man TT.

Do you know if I could watch it in the telly here in Ireland by any chance?

ITV4 have a hour long program 3 times a day all this week. The 9pm slot is
the 'todays run' slot, and the midday and 6pm slots seem to be repeats of
the previous days 9pm slot.

For those without UK TV access the official web site is at
http://www.iomtt.com/TT-2009.aspx and look for the TTXGP which runs on
Friday.

Hmm, hail in the west of IoM has put this mornings racing  off to this
afternoon ... marvelous English summer weather ...
