'[EE] Microchip ENC28J60 Ethernet Controller availa'

Does anyone know when the Microchip ENC28J60 ethernet
controller will be available for either sampling or purchase?
It appears that a PIC can interface with the device using
the SPI interface. Microchip also provides TCP/IP stack for it
(although I can't currently find it on their site).

Digikey says December 12 for purchase.

Yes. I've been using samples for nearly a year. I think production is
supposed to be late Q4 or early Q1, but better ask a Microchip rep.

The stack is for the 18F family. I've ported it to the 30F. Seems to work.

Hmmm... Sometimes there's a difference between works and works well.
I've been wondering about using this device with an AVR Mega based system
and have been watching for posts on this device and so it would be useful to
get some idea of how well the device works, would be nice - if of course
you're allowed to say publicly.
If you can comment, based on your experience so far would you say it:
- works well with no real issues and was easy to get going
- works well with no real issues, but took a lot of work to get going
- works but has some minor issues but not serious
- works but has serious reliability or performance issues
Would you recommend others should use it?

I started working with the ENC28J60 early on when there were some know
problems. The latest version fixes many of them, but they are still
engineering samples with some known problems. Microchip seems to be taking
this device seriously and I expect the final production units will work
nicely.
As for the overall system, it is still in development on my end too. TCP
seems to largely work, but I am seeing occasional flakys. However, this
could just as well be in the TCP/IP stack, in my porting of it, in my
application code, or in the rest of my system as it could be in the
ENC28J60.

EDTP http://www.edtp.com/ look to be selling their Frame Thrower PCB now.
Any ideas on what devices they are shipping with? Should I order one now or
wait a while longer?
Cheers
