'[OT:] Internet paranoia'

Why does my internet connection constantly send bytes by the Kbytes even though I am not doing anything. Even if i click on stop icon and nothing is being downloaded, the byte counter keeps racking up the Kbytes sent.

It's not that I am paranoid, it's just that everybody is out to get me!

Thanks
John

Just because you're paranoid it doesn't mean we're not talking about you.

You might want to download a free spyware remover.  Look at Spybot search
and destroy as well as Ad-aware.  Acutally, neither one gets it all so
download both.
Good Luck,
FJ

I just fought this same problem on my family's computer. Found many
worms/viruses that were not even detected by NAV with latest virus sigs
file. I tracked them down and killed them manually (it gives a certain sense
of satisfaction!)

Some of the programs that were running that turned out to be worms/viruses:

ethernet32L.exe
jkkkjum.exe
spoolsrv.exe
wuamgrd.exe
msoffice2.exe
svcohst.exe
mscnsz.exe
NAVscan32.exe
svchosting.exe
exp1orer.exe (not: numeric 1, not letter L)

The programs were being driven by "Run" keys in the registry.

In addition to antivirus, I'd recommend the following software to protect
against ad-ware, spy-ware and trojans.  Their functionality overlaps a bit
but the additional coverage is worth it.  I've been using these for years
and IMO they are good, stable packages and have likely saved me a ton of
grief.

Lavasoft Adaware
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
Spybot Search & Destroy

I concur on the need to use a spyware remover (I like Lavasoft's Ad-Aware) as well as an anti-virus program
(Norman Virus Control for me!).  It's frightening how much crap can accumulate and "My computer seems to be
slowing down" is a cry I hear from users remarkably often.

I've been meaning to tell you something about John - I'll send you a private email...

Not everyone, but the filesharers and viruses for sure! Disable file
sharing and DCOM on your Windows machine and you should be better. Or
better even, get Outpost (a firewall program) and install it. Outpost is
fairly good imho. It's a free download for now.
