Here are the points:

1. We have to convert to the new list server software at MIT: Mailman.
http://mailman.mit.edu/pipermail/mailman-users/2003-April/000002.html The
transition
might be easy, or it might be a total pain the in ass. We don't know.

2. The existing admins are all some combination of burnt out, pissed off,
busy and or trying to have a life. Trust me, its a REALLY thankless job. Not
without rewards, but as Dale says, you need to have a lot of Karma to work
off.

- I don't do people well, so I really can't be policing the list or helping
newbies. Ask Chad. I also have enough to do with the site and moving the
archive to the new list feed.

- Josh is buried in error messages (which the new list server is said to
reduce) and as a student I doubt he can always find time to devote to it.

- Dale is burnt out and has a life. He is still married and has a job. Lets
not drag him down with the rest of us. <GRIN>

- Herb also has a life and spends more than enough time with error messages
and helping newbies out.

- Jory is ready for it to just go away. He has continued to find "sponsors"
for us at MIT, but that must be getting old by now.

Which brings us to:

We need one or two people from the list membership to devote an hour or so a
day (every damn day, day after day...) to helping with the list for a good
long time so that one of the existing admins will be freed up to do the move

AND/OR

one or two people (hopefully with experience on mailman list server) to help
us transfer to that new software and teach the "old" admins what we need to
know to keep it running

AND/OR

a very, very stable benefactor who is able to host a mailing list that
generates between 1 to 4 GB (that is Giga Bytes) of traffic daily (as in
every day). MIT is STABLE enough to handle the 200 emails times 10KB average
size times 2000 members plus another 100 error messages,etc... times 4
admins, etc... it adds up. AND it goes on year after year. Did I mention
stable? As in no, I don't think we want to host it on your killer Linux box
via the screaming DSL connection that your Mom pays for, thanks anyway.

... hummm I think I'm transferring Karma much too fast...

Think hard before you speak up. Remember that you will have to work with me.
<GRIN>

Excuse my ignorance, but Is there a good reason why the list couldn't be transferred to Yahoogroups?
This seems to work fine for several other lists I'm a member of, although these are significantly
smaller than the Piclist. You quickly get in the habit of ignoring the few lines of advertising they append to the end of
messages.

I'm subscribed to a few Yahoo groups, generaly ok but not overly reliable
IME.  Does anyone have experience of http://www.freelists.org/ ?  It
provides free mail lists for any technology related topics, no bandwidth
limit, no advertising.  Of course, TNSTAAFL but the testimonials seem to be
full of praise.  No serious PIC related goups on there that I can find so
shouldn't be treading on anyones toes.

Cheers

James,

I won't claim to know what the different list server software is or how it all works, but I could help with the admin tasks.  I'm out of town a lot, but generally have access and can make the time.  Can you add more detail on what's required?

Alternately, if someone knows the specific tasks for the move, I could help there.

Cheers,
-Neil.

Well, the two aren't exactly related per se. MIT hasn't told us to go
away yet, though it could come at any time. They want us to move to the
new list server, which we're willing to do, we just need help from the
members as none of us seem to have the time to do it all ourselves. If
we're already moving the list, and someone else would be willing to host
it, it might be the ideal time to move it - two birds with one stone.

It's not so much that we want our own hardware software, it's more that
MIT could drop us if they wished. We generate a _LOT_ of data transfer
for them.

Would you be so kind as to describe the relationship the list has with MIT?
Is there a history of the PICLIST somewhere?

I curious as to the MIT/PICLIST setup and why we are still associated with
them. If it is because of student sponsors, that seems like a tenious link
at best!

Really? I'm on over 50 yahoo lists, and have found no reliability problems
with any of them. Maybe it's your ISP and their link to the web?

But how long will they last? With no advertising there is no revenue stream,
so how can they sustain the business? Bandwidth & personnel are not free.

I have seen the demise or sale of many such 'free' lists. (Listbot,
Onelist, dejanews, etc.) so I am reluctant to switch to a new list
only to have to change again some near time down the road.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this only works for the webmail right?
In other words, to get mail from yahoo groups like I do now, I
have to provide the same address right? That's a last resort
in my opinion. The cookies blow too.
I don't know that I can contribute an hour a day, but I can go a
few hours a week, to keep this list going. Let me know who to talk
to about it.

For what it is worth, I too really like web page based forums. Some of
them are a bit grim, but the efficiently designed and busy, lively
forums are a pleasure to use.

Of course I doubt this is a solution to the problem in hand. I don't
know what the relative running costs and admin requirements are.

And besides, I know that many people won't even consider moving to a
web-based forum after they've got so used to downloading text-based
emails every day.

You might want to check out http://www.freelists.org.  I've run several mailing
lists on http://www.freelists.org for a couple of years, but they're all small
potatoes compared to this list.

The admin functions can be done via a web interface or E-mail.  Burned-out
administrators can even turn on the MYOPTIC flag and not see the bounced
E-mail. :-)  You might want to check them out to see if PICList qualifies.

I checked out several options, including Yahoo, before I chose Freelists.
Apart from running the hosting system myself, I couldn't find another list
server that allowed me as much flexibility.

I'm just new here, but way don't you get a small amount of publicity in the
site and that way be able to support the list and pay someone to help you. I
would not mind it as what I am getting from this mailing list is just great.
I wish I could help but I have no knowledge that would help you.

Absolutely, but there must be a guarantee of freedom from editorial interference.

The Piclist undoubtedly saves their FAEs considerable time supporting users, and encourages people
to use their chips, helping them to their recent boost to the number 1 shipper by volume.
