Newt Gringrich claims 3 nukes could destroy much of the electrical and
electronic infrastructure of the USA.  How real is his claimed threat
from a scientific standpoint ?

Read the novel "One Second After" by William R. Forstchen. Its a
doomsday novel the is predicated on EMP. The Newtster wrote the forward
for the novel. EMP is a well know phenomenon that was discovered in the
late '50s or early '60s during atmospheric nuclear testing over the
Pacific Ocean. It can do what the Newtster claims. Google "EMP"

I love some of the terms used in that article:

"HEMP can pose a serious threat to military systems.."

"HEMP Fields".

I wonder if they were aware of the double meaning in what they were
writing.

Cheers,

Bob

Ask Gargoyle about Starfish Prime (and friends).
AFAIR it killed street lights in Hawaii.
Good trick if you can do it.

Turned our skies red for weeks.

While there look for "Lucky Dragon" - not so lucky :-(.
Collateral damage, but not EMP.

I'm fairly sure if they paid more attention to HEMP fields and the
contents thereof everywhere would be just that little happier and
there'd be less fighting.
