'[OT]: Why I Like Digikey'
2003\07\18@234251 by Bob Axtell

face picon face
I'm here in the US (AZ) and I've found Digikey to be indispensible. Here's why:

OBVIOUS REASONS:

1. Has a high price but offsets it by almost ALWAYS being in stock. If
you'll notice, this is ALWAYS the case with any commodity sale.

2. Has an excellent shipping department. These guys REALLY know how to get
the stuff out on time.

NOT SO OBVIOUS REASONS:

1. Bigger distributors have built their parts substitute sheet on Digikey's
part  number system. Just tell 'em it has to be the same as Digikey#
xxx-xxxx-ND, and they'll be able to match it.

2. Digikey's prices are consistent. A design engineer can assume that the
REAL price for a component is exactly 1/2 of what digikey charges for
onesies. This makes estimating costs MUCH easier than the ol' days.

3. Their stock choices are relevant. They stock stuff that IS BEING USED,
not pie-in-the- sky junk. If you are looking for a 3.3V regulator, you have
a choice of going to Digikey.com or going to LT or National's website. But
Digikey eliminates second-guessing about the actual price and availability.

Just my $.02... which won't buy anything anymore....

I use this one myself.  Sometimes I am looking for a part, and they
might have ten variations on it.  Instead of investigating all of them,
I just buy whatever they have the most of in stock.  That has always
worked for me so far.

Here's a biggie - on-line ordering that's available anywhere there is a
dial-up connection.  Perfect example from this past Wednesday evening: I'm
on site at the local football stadium and had a power supply fail.  Swapped
in my lab supply (I bring a dual 0-30V 3A supply every event I do there)
and then used my laptop to log into the Digi-key website.  I was on-line
less than 10 minutes (this included searching out the most suitable model)
and the replacement supply was in my shop the next morning.

Hey, as a quick heuristic, it is not bad.  My logic is that, in general,
I want the most commonly used variation of a part, because my needs are
not esoteric.  So when you see a list of variants for a particular part,
and the numbers are something like:

A: <non stock>
B: <non stock>
...
C: 2
D: 0
E: 20345

You can pretty much guess that variant E is the most commonly used part.
Yes, I know this isn't a guarantee; that's why it is called a heuristic.
