This is not really related to those wanting to experiment with PICs, but
there is a package called "crocodile clips" available which is a spice type
emulator for electronic circuits. It has all sorts of nifty bits in it
including digital elements, as well as things like leds. Some of the guys at
a club I go to have been using it to design some control hardware as they
learn electronics (or is that the other way round).

You can definitely "blow things up" using this package. If you pass too much
current through a led it glows and the glow gets brighter until it catches
"fire" and smokes it. makes an interesting demonstration of how things can
go wrong for the uninitiated trying to wire up circuits. If I remember
correctly it is an offshoot of a package that seems to be designed to model
chemical reactions for high school use. Search for "crocodile clips" to find
the distributor. For UK folk I'm told it costs about GBP30 at Maplins.
