'[OT] 2D drafting recommendations'
2005\10\19@104501

Gordon Williams
Hi All,
I'm looking for a simple 2D drafting package. Any recommendations
(preferably free) for windows machine?
This is for simple layouts (not schematics).
Thanks,
Gordon Williams

Not free but fairly affordable, ~$40US.
<http://www.deltacad.com/>
I've used it for a couple of years and find it very good for my casual
drafting needs.

I've used the board editor from (cadsoft's) Eagle for drawing things
other than PCBs. It can work pretty well, depending on what you're
looking for...

Yes, I've used Eagle as well, but this time I want to do something that
didn't fit Eagle's capabilities.

Someone recently pointed to CadStd...It has a very
AutoCAD-like interface, but the free version has a
couple of very useful features missing (snap to
intersect and trim, especially).
There has to be a free, open-source program out
there somewhere...

If so I would be much interested,
could you thinkif you remember some more details.
I would love to build a freeware ACAD viewer (dxf/dwg),
but the problemis, that I can't get the right libraries,
without violating the ACAD license.

Not really a 2D drafting package - but it *IS* a PCB layout package:

Open source and on-going development makes it worth checking out,

Deltacad is also my favorite
But here is a free one http://www.apperson.org/cadstd/
also simple to use and free http://www.vectorengineer.com/
you may also do a search for dolphin part master I heard they were giving it
away free.
but for simplicity, Deltacad wins.

Yes I've checked that a while ago,
but when you download the license,
you'll find something completly different :-(
The freeware libraries may not be distributed, nor as libraries, nor
embedded.
So the @#$ "Open Design Alliance" isn't open at all !!
cheers,
Stef

It would be helpful to know more about what you're planning to use it for.
An example, maybe?

Hello Gordon,

I use CorelDraw 9 for the tasks you listed. Not free, but you may be able to
buy it relatively cheap on eBay or Amazon.

Vitaliy
