'[OT] Nero can't see drive'
2008\07\21@224205
by

I recently re-formatted this PC and found last night that the burner
isn't seen by Nero. Prior to the re-format there were no problems
at all
Drive is LG GSA-4167B, with the accompanying LG DVD Writer
Solution and Nero 5.5 CDs. I used these for the previous installation
The problem is that Nero offers only Image Recorder (CD-R/RW)
as an option for a recorder in the drop-down menu. Using this option
will save an .nrg image file to HDD, not a CD
The drive will play anything, is in the devices list, and according to
XP it's working properly. LG doesn't have drivers as such, only a
firmware upgrade for the drive, which I feel isn't necessary
AFAICT from Googling, XP drivers are all that's needed. I don't
recall needing to do anything special before. Nero and LG forums
don't have any enquiries about this particular selection issue
Any ideas ?
TIA

I suggest the following .
1. Uninstall Nero,
2. Trawl though registry and delete any remaining Nero reference.
3. Re-install Nero
Whilst I'd expect the registry entry to be a problem if a repair
install of XP was done, due to disk and drive identifiers being
changed, obviously registry shouldn't exist on a complete reformat.
But I suppose it is possible that their has been a corruption on the
entries.
You don't say if you can burn using the inbuilt software provided with
XP or Vista. If this doesn't work, then the problem isn't Nero.
Which version/build of Nero is being used?

Tried the XP burn process. Windows led me a merry dance, as it likes
to do, so I gave up and burned the files with Real Player

5.5.9.2
I'll see what happens with the registry
What a nuisance waste of an afternoon

What service packs did you have on windows before and after the
reinstall. IIRC older versions of nero were broken by XP SP2.
I would first try upgrading to the latest sub-version of the 5.5 series
(upgrading sub-versions within a series is free, going from one series
to the next costs money). Failing that maybe try the noexecute=alwaysoff
(or something like that, google for the exact way to type it) in boot.ini.

None

Doing that now (dial-up). We'll see what happens

I've had Nero do that occasionally, (with an LG drive, fwiw), and found a
reboot fixed it. Once Nero got it in its head that a drive wasn't a burner,
it refused to change it. There's also an option in Nero for selecting the
driver type (ATAPI etc) that may be set wrong.
Of course, you could have done what I did once, swapped drives and forgot
that it wasn't a burner, it could only read DVDs.
Nero (v8) suffers from bloat & annoyances these days.

I gave up on Nero. Now when I have to create discs using Windows I've
been using Infrarecorder. The only Nero program I still like is Recode
to transcode DVDs. But now with cheap hard drives and multi layer
DVDs, why transcode anymore anyways?

Thanks, but thank you no. One stuff-up at a time I think

So I've been reading on the forums. Many people are sticking with 7

Upped it to 5.5.10.56 and that seems to have done the trick. At
least the drive is now in the menu, will try burning some files after
a night's zzzzzzzzzzzz. And am I looking forward to those

I'll look into that, thanks. Wasn't particularly pleased with Real
ignoring the file order I gave it and burning them according to
size, not name. grrrrrrrr

Are you absolutely sure that you didn't download an upgrade? 5.5 is a
very old version which didn't support huge numbers of DVD Writers. Might
be worth checking the compatibility lists.

Pretty sure. I keep a folder for copies of downloaded zips, exes,
patches etc and there's nothing Nero in it. There are trial versions
of Alcohol 120 and Blindwrite in there but the drive was writing
before that, straight out of the box actually
AFAICT all is back to normal after the Nero upgrade, have done
an audio CD and a data CD
Thanks everyone

I have such a folder myself but it's a nightmare to thrawl through,
especially when I don't bother to change the filename from
"nrs7.8.6.exe" :-P
