I missed that. Good job though, nice steady shots.
I didn't think you could get that high in a bucket truck though.

I asked how they got the shots and here's what Lissa said:
It was a pretty big "bucket truck" - 125 feet up! But we were lucky
with the weather 'cause it gets pretty windy up there!

There MUST be some Linux alternative, no?

Seems like every camera, DVD burner, etc installs a lamed up version of QT.
Works OK for looking at video clips but it constantly nags you to go install
the full thing. Fortunately, some of the video software (ArcSoft maybe?)
will convert QT to MPEG. But I haven't seen anything that will touch RM.

It's not easy to find at http://www.real.com/ but there is a RealPlayer
10 for Linux.

Pity. The existence of one from Real probably means that there isn't a "not
a virus" version.

You can get a Quicktime codec that lets you use Windows Media Player (and any other player that uses the windows codecs)
http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm
The equivalent real player codec is here
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm
I have not tried either of these!

K-Lite MegaCodec is what I use.

I don't know what you mean by 'virus'. I have RealPlayer 10 on Linux
(and older RealPlayer 8) and it works fine. No nagware at all. It also
sounds better than MP3 at the same data rate and many news/tv stations
use this format.
The only problem I see is, when installed it configures the system to
open a lot of file formats with realplay, which it shouldn't. This
mostly affects a file called ~/.mailcap on *nix systems so backing that
up will give you a chance to back out of its unwanted changes, if any.

Most people remember to clear cookies out of the browser, but don't
realize this has it's version of cookies too.
There is an option where you can turn-off realplayer cookies.

I don't think you could call it a virus for the reason that you need to
install iTunes. You'll need to brush up on your dictionary definition
for what viruses are, and neither of these appear to be that, AFAIK.

I wouldn't call RP a virus. If you aren't careful when you
install it (taking note of default settings and unticking
options for example) it does dial home. You can see it
trying if you have anything like Zone Alarm. I believe they
got in trouble a few years ago for being too aggressive -
ISTR it might have been in conjunction with doubleclick.
I've used RP for a long time and it's fine. The s/w that
appears to cause more trouble on the family's computers
is the likes of Gator, Kazaa and some MSN. Anything
aimed at careless tweenies and teenagers

To be more precise for the dictionary freaks, RP used to be a trojan. It
was a program designed to collect marketing information for sale pretending
as a video player. I haven't used RP in a while, so it is possible that
they have changed, but I've never been a big believer in the leapord
changing his spots. My suspicion (no data) is that they have just gotten
sneakier.
No doubt about Gator and Kazaa. Haven't used/studied MSN, but it is
annoying that I have to jump through a bunch of hoops to turn it off. At
least it appears to be benign, but I only run it for a few hours after
installing Windows, so it could do all sorts of nasty things and I wouldn't
know.
I have taken to turning off all outgoing connects at the bastion firewall
whenever I install software. Generally these phone home things make their
first call just at install time, and lots of honest programs make their only
call then. The firewall then happily logs all attempts for me to study.

I'll agree with the other thread (by John J. McDonough) which refers to
them as trojan or data collection type software, in which case you
might as well include windows-XP, Adobe Acrobat 6 plus a fair bit of
software created after the internet became a common commodity.
cheers!

To an extent and getting worse, I agree. But RealPlayer and QT are
*particularly* obtrusive.

If you want a realplayer that doesn't come with most of the junk that
it usually is bundled with, get it from a link at Cartalk. Their
users complained so much that for awhile they stopped using RP
altogether, but eventually came to a solution with Real, which
involved Real supplying a non-junk version of realplayer for cartalk
listeners. It's not perfect, but I haven't had any problems with
advertising or spying.
Of course, I usually use VLC when possible, and find that it plays
realplayer streams just fine.

Finally got rid of the RealPlayer and could not get VLC to do real
video. VLC site says NO too. Hmm ???

This one is finally fatal for RP, the mega version of K-Lite codec is
tested to do RM and RMVB with the media player classic here. It also
has QT codec, yes it killing two spyware in a go.
