USB will NEVER be a usefull buss for these niche projects if somebody doesn't deliver a cheap and simple to use chip that takes care of the protocol. This chip got to cost under 4 US$ and come in 8..18 pin DIL packet. Check out amongst others, the Thesys TH6501 and 6503 - 16 pin, USB to SPI bus converters - haven't got a price as yet. It even has a programmable clock out to run your PIC off, so you only need one crystal http://www.thesys.de/ This said, I'm still holding judgement on USB, even though I'm designing the stuff - pity it's not peer-to-peer.
