But I think most engineers (in the broad sense) are less worried about
how you pronounce it than if you use them properly ;-)

Ok, ok, now I've got to check some references.

Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clarence_Melvin_Zener ) says the diode in question was named after Mr. Zener.  Photos of him can be seen here:

http://www.aip.org/history/esva/catalog/esva/Zener_Melvin.html

Looking further, the American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition has a wav file indicating the pronunciation is zeeeeener as in Xena, Warrior Diode.  Dictionaries are not always correct, nor are they representative of speech in far-flung wild places like New Zealand, as an example.

Of course, Mr. Zener is no longer with us so you can say it however you want.

Merriam-Webster (http://www.m-w.com) has both pronunciations.  I wonder if
this doesn't simply follow the zee/zed difference.

I say zeener and zeebra

If you want a long vowel, you need two of them (as above)!  (Zeen and the art of motorcycle maintenance? :-)

Zen, zen-uh, zeb-ruh, xen-on and in fact it ought to be Xen-uh Warrior Princess!  :-)

Eeeeexactly. What's he gonna do about it ? Wooohoooohoooo
correct pronunciation from beyond the grave ? Doubt it ;-)

Good job on the investigative etymology - but you realise it
changes nothing. Or we'd all be saying nucular eh

ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHH!

You hit a raw nerve there - I think anyone who can't
pronounce "nuclear" should be disallowed from trying to
say it on television.

And certainly from being able to use weapons of that
ilk!
