I am now building up this version. Looks good so far.
I'll post the results when it is finally put together.
(next 48 hrs).

Why USB interface ???
Microchip USB implementation is slowly comparison to USB/COM interface with FT232B
I'm tested  ICD2 clone with FTDI chips and all is OK :-)
Is easy modify USBCOM converter and ICD2clone to power from USB
But USB power is limited to 500mA :-(

Joan, its cheaper here in Tucson, AZ to buy the USB to Serial cable-type
adaptors.

I paid $19.00 USD for mine. Works on everything I've tried, and probably
works on this just as well...

You don't have to have a separate power supply for ICD2 : it is
feeded through USB line.

- switching PSU for VPP
- cheap PMOSFET switch
- new design PCB
- correct few small mistakes

Hi All,

I've been trying to get a PIC talking to a Trimble Lassen SQ GPS module
(3.3v) with no success so far.  Without flaming me for being an idiot <g>,
can anyone tell me by reading the below excerpt from the Lassen manual
whether or not I need to do anything to the signal before feeding into my
PIC?

Note again that the Lassen is a 3.3v device.

The manual says re the serial interface:

As an embedded design, the Lassen SQ GPS provides direct CMOS compatible TTL
level serial I/O. The RX and TX signals on the J2 I/O connector are driven
directly by the UART on the Lassen SQ GPS. Interfacing these signals
directly to a UART in your application circuitry provides direct serial
communication without the complication of RS-232 or RS-422 line drivers.
Note - The serial I/O signals on J2 are TTL level. They are not
inverted or driven to RS-232 levels.

Thanks!

Are you running the PIC at 3.3v as well?  If not you almost certainly need
some level translation.  The PIC's UART input uses a Schmitt trigger and the
minimum input high threshold is 0.8Vdd, or 4volts for a 5v Vdd.  Clearly the
PIC would never see the 3.3 volt output from the GPS.

You certainly need something in the other direction as well (if you are
transmitting data to the GPS).  Injecting a 5volt signal into a 3.3volt part
will cause any input protection diodes to conduct, potentially causing
unexpected operation or possibly even damage.  A simple current limiting
resistor and a schotky diode to clamp the level to the 3.3volt supply would
probably suffice.

Regards

Mike

is there a requirement to do some modifications to the former icd2
clone, to correct the 'few small mistakes', or what will my problems be,
when i've already bought the old version of your icd2 clone?

old version is full functional, but charge pump is no good choice for generating Vpp :-(
'few small mistakes' - this is only corections of names and values of same pasive components

does this mean that i will run into troubles, when using the old icd2
clone?
how do I have to modify it to avoid troubles?
(I've just got your icd2 kit recently, but have not yet soldered it
together)
thanx!
