I have used the DS1620, which uses a 3-wire interface. It's pretty easy
to talk to and it's cheap, but doesn't come in anything smaller than 8 pin
DIP package. The 1820 is more accurate and smaller (TO-92), but more
expensive and uses a different interface protocol -- not quite as simple
to talk to, I've never tried it myself.
You could also use an LM35 or similar if you are usig a PIC with ADC. I
played with one briefly, but not long enough to make it work reliably. It
acts like a Zener with voltage that varies linearly with temperature.

The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds new
discoveries, is not "Eureka!" (I found it!) but "That's funny ..."
