MPLAB (and collective programs, such as the assembler, etc) can be run
reasonably well on windows 3.1 and up. This means you can buy a cheap used
laptop and program your chips on the beach.
It also means you have a few limitations for backwards compatability, but if you
are already creating a different directory for each project, then why would you
need long file names? The directory can be as long as you like (though it will
only show up as the 8.3 inside mplab).
And, of course, if you need it you can go into windows explorer and rename the
file yourself. Again, mplab will only see the 8.3 equivilant (Bicycle Timer.asm
becomes BICYCL~1.ASM) but you can be rather creative with 8 alphnumeric
characters anyway. (BIKETIMR.ASM)
