Well, it's been a year since I developed it and I haven't gotten any
closer to setting things up so I can sell them (or any of the other
devices I'd like to market), so here it is:
http://www.ubasics.com/spic/
It uses a 16c54, is full-duplex (4800bps @4MHz), and can either be
controlled with two simple commands, or act as a serial -- > parallel or
parallel --> serial device.
Some uses might include:
Adding ports to smaller designs
Sending 8 bits of data over a 2 wire connection (use two. At the
fastest the outputs would be updated 2400 times per second)
Hooking it up to a computer and have 8 bits of input/output for a serial
port
Controlling an LCD
Multiplexing data streams (you can use a single device at 24kbps to
reliably encode 8 2400bps streams into one stream, decoding could be
done in software or using another of these)
You could use 9 on each end of a 2 wire link to send 256 digital signals
from one place to another, each signal being updated 240 times per
second. (ok, this is a pretty expensive approach to solve a simple
problem, but it would be fun...)
I appreciate any comments. I'm afraid I cannot provide support for
this. I've gone through it line by line with a fine-tooth comb and
believe I have everything 'perfect', but I could easily be wrong.
