'[PIC]: decoding hellscrieber with a pic'

hi all,

sure you can encode hellscreiber with a pic(http://home.clear.net.nz/pages/bryanjr/projects/hellbeacon.shtml)....

but can you receive it?

i think one could using an LCD and an f84 and a tone decoder.  you could make the font appear on the lcd because it has all those little cells

for 5x5 font you use each cell like this:

XXXXX
XXXXX
XXXXX
XXXXX
XXXXX
nnnnn
nnnnn

X's are used n's not.

anybody wanna give it a go and help me code it?(thats only if it is possible ;)

seem's easy =)

if tone is on the selected cell is on if not then the cell is not on.  then you wait and do it again and again and again

Dear hellscreiber experimenters,

Unfortunately, I can't seem to access the link on that page to "more details"
 www.conquestsys.com/hamradio/hellschreiber.html
Is this a stale link ?

Fortunately, a quick web search picked up other sites with details:

A graphics LCD, of course ... that would be interesting. It looks like it would
automatically handle arbitrary symbols. Including European letters with the
little dots and slashes over them ... I wonder if Chinese letters would be
legible ? I wonder if the PIC could emulate gray-scale somehow ?

I've played with a relatively small (128x64 pixel) graphics LCD from
 Okaya Electric America Inc.
 http://www.okaya.com/
There's some bigger ones from Optrex listed in Digikey
 http://www.digikey.com/
.
What other graphics LCD panels are people using ? What's a good source for
low-cost panels ?

i was gonna use a 16x2 character and upload special characters :)

I think that a PIC needs DSP capability to decode Hellschreiber and also a
graphical LCD, or else you will be displaying only 8 characters at a time.
The display on a standard LCD will also flicker in nasty ways if you
update the patterns while they are displayed. Last, the power of the
Hellschreiber would be lost by brutal slicing in a black/white decision.

I think that a good Hellschreiber receiver can be made using spinning
clock (propeller clock) technology and analog filters. A PIC could handle
timing and sync issues although I suspect I'd try the good old tape motor
with settable speed by hand at first.

Interesting problem, the hellschreiber decoding is done by the brain
recognizing letters amongst the noise. The brain is so good at this
I suspect you would need a LOT of image processing power to do the job

You need the ability to do convolutions over the image to try and find edges
and connected regions, and then try to map the resulting patterns into
recognizable letters, I would start with a lot of ram and good matrix math
capability. Maybe look at some of the dedicated image processing chip like
zoran and others..

It doesnt need to decode the tone, i will find a seperate chip to do that.
BTW i wouldnt update until i have the whole character
