Today I wanted to access your book files page at
McGraw-Hill:
<HTTP://WWW.Mcgraw-hill.com/engineering/updatezone/predko/index.htm>
. . . and your snippets page:
<HTTP://WWW.Mcgraw-hill.com/engineering/updatezone/predko/html/snippets.htm>
404! They were there the other day, they have just
been moved. A look through the site map gave no
obvious answer. The WWW site has a built-in Alta
Vista search, which found no "Predko".
Am I thorough?
*A look at the URL shows that they were both in
"update zone" - no built-in Alta Vista search find.

Have you been able to get any of the code from link? It just keeps
trying to connect here when I try the Projects/ links.
It's about as helpful as the book was, which didn't come with a CD.
Waste of $$ IMHO.

I tried the Clock project, and got the parts list, the pdf schematic and
the asm file.

Thanks, Gerhard!
I complained about 404 errors for Myke Predko's Update
Zone WWW pages at McGraw-Hill.
Believe me, McGraw-Hill's problem will never be my
problem!
With the 50$ book, I was offered the files
downloadable through these pages and I decided that,
yes, I would download them.
I am certain that the URLs that I have here worked
just a few days ago.
One thing is absolutely certain!:
Bloody bleeding McGraw-Hill's xx,xxx$ WWW
per-fesh-null site has a built-in Alta Vista search
that was completely unable to find any of the obvious
keywords.

URL from Grinder:
<HTTP://WWW.Mcgraw-hill.com/engineering/updatezone/predko/index.htm>
The server name has been changed. There was a mistake
made somewhere. I recall that the "WWW" server was
what worked when I tried it. I have them as such in
hyperlinks in my Microchip PIC MCU reference HTML WWW
page. Now "books"?
(I am unable to prove anything.)
I found the "snippets" page through a hyperlink on the
"index.htm" page.
Gerhard, I thank you sincerely for taking the time to
do what you did. I had given up.

Hi, Wayne,
I just replied to Gerhard (thanks!) about the
mistaken server names, "WWW" vs. "Books".
(Ah, where'd that mistake come from? Impossible to
tell.)
---
PS:
Oh, yes, now I see that I have already downloaded some
of the files. I suspect that the WWW site server name
changed. My HTML did definitely work at one time.
---
These all seem to be working. I checked the URLs
several times, and I checked them again just now: they all four work. The HTML pages seem to work.
This mess is edited from my Microchip PIC page (I
took away the LT/GT pairs):
Predko book files (TITLE)Programming and Customizing PICmicro®
Microcontrollers(/TITLE)
(TITLE)Projects - Programming and Customizing
PICmicro® Microcontrollers(/TITLE)
(TITLE)Experiments - Programming and Customizing
PICmicro® Microcontrollers(/TITLE)
(TITLE)Code Snippets and Macros - Programming and
Customizing PICmicro® Microcontrollers(/TITLE)
Very specifically, just now, on the "index.htm" page
in the top URL, yes, both "projects" and "links"
worked for me.
(Now, what do I know? 3,000 MHz CPU, 1 GB main
memory, genuine Seagate Barracuda HDD, incredibly huge
MB video board, 22" glass CRT, all the fancy crap -
this junker is just about 90% crashed. Gates just
does not have it.
Must reboot soon . . . )
>It said "Insert disk 3..." but only 2 fit.
I know that feeling! Fortunately, my
way-too-expensive comnfuter has a disk drive opening
where I can drop in as many as it takes.
Thanks for all of the help, suggestions, questions!

PS:
A friend of mine also bought the book new without
CD-ROM.
At the Phoenix public library, both copies of the book
have the CD-ROMs stolen, and one has the programmer
PCB stolen.
(Those glued-in plastic envelope things do not just
fall open!)

Weird. I got the clock.pdf but not the asm file. Says the link is
bad. I was told by Mcgrew-hill that they didn't include the CD
because "they had problems making them". The book was one of the
worst I have ever seen and the company that published it is unable to
even make CD's. Thay said all of the CD contants could be downloaded
from their site. Looks like they have problems even doing that.
Thanks Gerhard. I have tried 2 different browsers and find bad links
in both of them. Thanks for the info tho....

We're at two ends of a spectrum. I *hate* books that come with
CDs. If the book is a paperback I can never get it to open right
without the cover actually bending.
As an author I specifically asked my editor to put the code on the
web rather than on a CD. (It's also on my web site under the "Code"
link.)

I'm with you, and there's another reason not to like them in the UK (and perhaps in the rest of Europe): a
book is zero-rated for VAT, but if it includes a CD it becomes VAT chargeable, so the price is 17.5% more for
the whole deal (which presumably costs more to begin with to cover the cost of creating and inserting the CD).
And since a CD is going to get out of date, the chances are it will be necessary to re-download it anyway!

I think if you bought a book with advertised downloadable content, they
have the obligation to make the download available through the advertised
addresses. And that wouldn't be difficult either, even with internal site
restructuration. Since there's now nothing at the advertised address, they
could simply have put a redirection page there -- and everybody would be
happy.
Is the book a new edition or has he 're-heated ' the turkey?

'At the Phoenix public library, both copies of the book

It takes a sad individual to steal an El Cheapo PCB; After spending an hour
cutting tracks and rewiring it i threw mine in the b*oody bin...after
reading the errata
later on, i came to the conclusion he'd been on the mushrooms again. Why
spend all
that time writing and publishing a book and leave so many cock-ups IN?
