'[PICLIST] ICD and ICE: What's the difference?'

Hello everyone,
I went to Microchip website and under development tools, they have
In-circuit Debugger and Emulator. What's are the differences between the
two systems and their advantanges/disadvantages?
Thank you in advance!
Best regards,
Thomas

Hi,
For future questions you post or, if my following response isn't helpful
enough ;-), here's a tip to get more responses. Use one of the PICLIST topic
tag's, in this case the [PIC]: tag would be appropriate. Without a topic tag
many PICLIST readers won't see your message. For more info on topic tags see
the mail list FAQ @ piclist.com.
Both the ICD and ICE are great debugging tools for PICs.
The basic difference between the ICD and ICE is that the ICD uses the target
processor and some of its resources while the ICE replaces the target
processor with a sophisticated piece of hardware that emulates the target
processor.
I use an ICE-2000 (owned by my employer) frequently and I haven't used the
ICD yet so I may get some info about the ICD wrong but here goes anyway.
ICD only supports newer versions of the PIC designed specifically to use it.
The ICE-2000 supports the entire PIC line.
ICD uses some of the resources of the target PIC including a little RAM and
some pins so, the application you are debugging can't use those resources.
ICE does not take away any resources from the target so you can use every
bit of RAM and all the pins.
ICD costs about $100US and the ICE-2000 costs about $1500US plus another
$600 for a module and adaptor (you need different modules for different PIC
families and adapters for different chip packages).
Hope this helps,
Paul
