'Choosing a LCD'

I would like to incorporate a LCD in a in a PIC project.  I am not sure
what type to get or where to get them from.  It would also be helpful if
I could get some sample code from somewhere.

Is the Hitatchi HD44780 controlled display that DonTronics sell suitable
or is it intended to be controlled with a PC?

Can anyone suggest where I can obtain a suitable device (preferably New
Zealand/Australia)?

check David Tait's links mirrored at:
http://www.dontronics.com/dtlinks.html
there is code examples from there.

http://www.dontronics.com/sli.html
is a serial to LCD kit. A new version will be posted soon.
These take the hard work out of interfacing LCD's, however you can brew
your own with a pic chip and a few components.

Anything with a 44780 is suitable.  It's intended to be controlled by
any computer or microprocessor you want!  I've just been learning on
a PC parallel port, but application to a PIC or Atmel will follow next;
it's just so much easier to experiment with FORTH (F-PC) on the PC to
start with and learn the codes and how they work.  Specs for the chip
are at:

.. while "how to" stuff is at:

I rather like http://www.vorlac.com.au/ but maddeningly, they seem to
have no link under the "optoelectronics" section you most want.
