Which is better for use with a 16f873, a resonator or a crystal?

Resonators are available with built in load capacitors which is handy. If you are going to be doing any particularly critical stuff such as high speed async comms then I'd go for a crystal, otherwise a resonator is fine.

Depends on your accuracy requirements - resonators are cheaper,
usually smaller, and probably more mechanically rugged if you don't
need crystal accuracy.
