I prefer to stick with genuine PIC parts
They have a proven track record, can yours be pluged in the wrong
way round and survive, burn your finger and still work or be
powered direct from a 9V alkaline battery without damage?
Also will you be releasing regular
upgrades of SPLAB IDE, SPLAB-C and SPASM ?
PS I am only this loyal to a company if they are straight with me.
Bouncing hundreds of messages to the PIClist though infuriating,
doesn't count.
The truth about SX doesn't count either, I won't touch the SX as long
as it's associated with parallax (parallax a bigger bunch of liers
is hard to find)

Is it true that they have, on the new version of windows
managed to increase the MTBF from 95 to 98 minutes ?

Is the programming algorythm directly equivalent to PIC54 etc (parallel)
or does one need special tools, and if so, which, and how much do they
cost. Is the programming a parallel process or the serial process applied
to 54 series cores.

Hi, Peter,
The programming tool required is a bit different than PIC. I can provide
timing spec. for you to deal with this or I can provide specific programmers
to do the programming.

Please send specs for programming. I/we make a certain PIC programming
tool and we would like to support your chips. If possible, send specs with
timing diagrams and tables. This way there will be fewer mistakes. We do
not accept Windows/Microsoft file formats. Send as plain text, Post

Well, the supply pin is an input, and the ground pin is an output. ;-)
If a Chinese company is duplicating Microchip's work, I'd expect far
more than a mere 30% off. Perhaps someone is taking a profit?
I'd want to know if it is licensed and how compatible it is.
And a web site adds credibility. No web site, no clue.

Hi Peter and all,
I completely agree with you. However, for the matter of the fact:
Parallax had stopped "releasing regular upgrades of SPASM", they said.
I find it also not so fine...

The company probably wants to keep a low profile, after a similar company
was put out of business for exporting pirate Win95, WinNT and Microsoft
Office CD-ROMS.
Regarding the pinouts, I think you can download the data sheets from
microchip. So for a YB16C54 (YB stands for Yellow Beard, till we know the
pirate's name), you would go to Microchip and download the datasheet for a
PIC15C54. A skilled pirate would have ensured that the pinouts are an exact
match, though some of the electical specs may vary. The key to hardware and
software piracy is to make an exact copy, and thus leave all documentation
and support expenses to the company you have victimized.

I've tried these devices with two existing 16c54 and one 16c56
designs & they worked fine.
The programmer software is a bit of a dog - the opcode mapping is
different, so you have to run the .hex file though TWO seperate dos
command-line converters (with different parameter formats!) before
loading it into the programmer! But it does appear to work.
My customer who was looking at these has put it on hold for the
moment, as he found he could get the genuine article cheaper by
importing from (I think) Australia. Maybe MCT are shipping devices at
lower prices to the far East to compete with other devices ?

I fail to understand the critisism (flames) that "Starfire Zhu" has attracted
for posting news of these products. I wish to make the following points.
1. A second (or third) source for chips is ALWAYS good news. It shows
that the market is maturing somewhat, and further increases the use
PIC based products. I have customers who INSIST on second source for
all parts.
2. It is not obvious that these are "rip-offs" of microchip parts,
merely pin compatible and code compatible. The 14 bit instruction
set for 16C5X parts is an indication that these aren't direct copies.
3. Mr "Starfire Zhu" has not laid claim to having designed these parts,
merely pointed out that they exist. Are we to assume that
anyone gets flamed for pointing out what others have made available?
4. The web site http://www.ezeuk.com has zipped doc files for the parts
no doubt closer scrutiny of the data sheets will clarify some of
these issues.
Ok, that's my 2 cents flame away!

FYI, the way things look here, for now, is, you buy the really good things
from companies that have no web site. They are simply too busy producting
and selling to bother about extra advertising ;) One should never look
upon a place through one's own glasses ;)

It's because his style reeks of psychologically expert hypnotic languaging,
and the cheery tone lulls many into ignoring the probable piracy. Also
because he has no visibility. Also because he answers only the easy
positive questions.

For what its worth, I'm not so sure the hardware side of his
offerings appear to be any more than is offered by many others -
functional clones of other products. If you can achieve the same
results without violating patents (and part of the art of many (most?
;-) patents is to describe simple common sense and prior art that any
fool knew about, in a form that sounds new to the patent examiner)
then common practice seems to be to go for it.
Copying other people's silicon directly sounds somewhat naughtier but
whose to say with any certainty that this is what's happening here?
(It may well be but I haven't seen anything that would make me
certain of it).
Even direct copying, if not in violation of patent or copyright, is
part of normal business practice (sadly perhaps, but is he being
criticised for being Chinese or for doing things that others wouldn't
dream of?).
And the children of Fairchild begat Intel, and the children of Intel
begat AMD and ..... ?
And the minds of Xerox Parc thought long and hard and developed all
sorts of toys (or maybe they saw them somewhere else that I haven't
heard of) and they said, "one day you will all use mice and windows
and GUIs and ..." (but they used different names for them), and the
boys at Apple said, "we sure will", and the boys at Microsoft said
.... and .... ?

Sorry, no. At this very moment I can walk 200 yds and buy any quantity of
W98 upgrades, W95, WNT v5, Virtual Studio 97 (4 CD's), Enc Brit 98 (3 cds)
etc etc at 5 CDROMs for $HK100, or $US12.95. Over the border the prices
are even cheaper. Just last night I watched Private Ryan - 3 cd's - which I
bought for $Hk20. Pirated books (in english) have been stopped for many
years but CDROMs have never been stopped.

China is only doing now what Japan did in the 1970's then Taiwan & Korea
did in the 80's & 90's. COPY, develop fast then start to worry about the
legalities.
Last week at the HK Electronics show it was very clear that China is a
major player in electronics fabrication & manufacture. The young people in
china today have english as their 2nd (non-dialect) language. A generation
ago it was russian and look where that got them! I would take a guess that
1/3 to 1/2 the mainland chinese booths had email or web addresses. The
trend is clear; get used to it.

FPGA implementations of popular processors have been mentioned a couple
of times. Are any of these freeware sorts of things? I need something to
do with all those Xilinx and Altera chips I have lying around...
Thanks

I have seen a app note of a VHDL implementation of a 'micro' (it lookedlike a PIC to me) on one of
the sites. Of course, I can't remember which.
I'll go through my old book marks...

Remember he's not a native english speaker. Oriental English often
appears rather 'colourful' to westerners! His messages are not
untypical of the style of many other far-easterners.

There is a man who has implemented a 'new' processor (not a clone) in a
Xilinx and plans to GPL it. The name is Allen and you can find the thread
in .embedded. and .design. I think.
