You have to send the instruction to  spam_OUTLISTSERVTakeThisOuTspamMITVMA.MIT.EDU not PICLIST

Send:  UNSUBSCRIBE PICLIST   as the body of your message.

You send a message containing the text "unsubscribe" to .....LISTSERVKILLspamspam.....MITVMA.MIT.EDU

I suspect it is as well to stress whenever answering this sort of
query, "the text and NOT the 'subject'".

If you just put it in the subject line as seems quite natural to do,
indeed that is the correct way for some list server software, and as we
so often see in messages sent to the list proper, even if you do send it
to LISTSERV, it doesn't work.

*That's* probably when people start sending stuff to the list instead
using the concept: "If at first you don't succeed, try every
permutation at random".

And that's no surprise - how else do you debug cranky MCU code? ;-)
