That is interesting. When I look at my MPLAB directory, it sucks up 31 meg of space, but I installed with the install disks (which uses compressed files). I suppose that means the web install is not sending the compressed data across, but the uncompressed stuff. (just a guess). Dan {Original Message removed}

Yes it is that big - because it has DOS, WIN3.1 and WIN95/98/NT versions of MPLAB, MPSIM, MPICE, etc in compressed format. - that's 6 and a half disks of the compressed stuff, OR, let the install.exe choose just the bits you need (but it looks like it sends the expanded components if it says 25Meg). Anyone known what install.exe is doing ? Bye. The web install for MPLAB downloads a small (relatively --256K) program that, when executed on your machine while connected to the web, just downloads those portions of MPLAB that you select. This is usually the preferred way to download MPLAB, and will be much quicker than downloading the full 7 disks. The files are transferred in a compacted state and expanded on your local machine in the MPLAB install directory. You can execute the same downloaded file (WEB412.EXE) later if you want to get other components of MPLAB. The 25Mb may refer to the size the downloaded files will be on disk. First of all , Tim is right..... there are several FREE vxd device drivers for both the serial and the parallel port under NT that Microchip could have used to write MPLAB for some reason they choose not to do so. Second, I find it less than pleasing if people start hacking at each other for having a less than perfect knowledge of the English language. This is after all a list that is free for all (I didn't even see any statement other languages may not be used). Do you seriously think most AMERICANS on the list have this knowledge talk to a brit and see what he thinks about it. There was no need to go to a third party VXD for PICSTART Plus or PRO MATE. MPLAB-ICD will run under NT in the next release. This one was a little out of Microchip's control --it was spec'd as NT compliant, but first delivery was not. The problem of getting MPLAB-ICE compliance is a much bigger problem. The way the drivers are currently structured, there are so many calls to the I/O that, under NT, it slooowws waaaay doowwn. It will run, but who wants to wait a couple of minutes when you single step? The drivers are being re-structured so that data gets collected and passed in larger buffers, requiring fewer calls to switch from the 16-bit MPLAB application to NT I/O access. I should have worded my sentence better. Before I typed it, I was intrigued by the way his/her sentence was written -- I found it interesting. Again..my apologies.
