'MPLAB..which version, which manual'

Hi, all
Im confused while trying to learn to use Mplab. I downloaded
version 3.4009 several wks ago. (I noticed there was also a 3.4
version.) I also downloaded the manual, called MPLAB user's guide. There
was only one manual, so I assumed it to be the latest, or useable with
all versions. The manual has no resemblence to the software. A week or
so ago, I noticed that there is a newer version, 3.99, I believe, and
still only one manual, not denoted as to version number.
I tried to get help from microchip, but I dont think anyone reads
the emails. Can anyone set me straight. It is very time comsuming to
download and print something which then turns out to be the wrong
document. Are there versions of Mplab to avoid? which version seems to
be most used. Since I have the manual I downloaded several weeks ago,
what version goes with it?
Thanks for any help you can give, since the learning process is
enough without the hassle of playing pin the tail on the donkey with
microchips software stuff.

Don,
The MPLAB User's Guides are in dire need of updating. They are being
worked on, but in the meantime, here are some tips. The simulator
works pretty much as described in the User's Guide and on-line help,
but the Project Manager is completely overhauled in v3.40 and later.
Use the MPLAB v3.40 Projects Tutorial that's on the Microchip web
site to see how to use the assembler, linker and compiler tools with
the new Project Manager.
The final result of building a project is producing a .HEX file to download
for simulation/emulation/device programming and a .COD file for debugging.
Once you have a project built you can use the simulator or emulator
to run/step through code, and you can bring up the PICSTART Plus to burn a
part.
Use the on-line help for info on MPASM and MPLAB-SIM, the simulator.
The debugging engine has not changed much, either for the emulators
or simulator. Watch windows have been revamped, but you can stil
press the Ins key while the watch window has focus to add/change
properties of watch variables.
Some new tutorials should appear in the next few weeks.
