I'm sure there are lots of basic languages that will run under Vista.
If you want to build GUI applications, then VB.NET, VB6, Powerbasic etc.
will work.
For command line stuff even QBasic should work if you install DOSBox
(http://www.dosbox.com), though if you want to start accessing ports
etc. you will have a problem I suspect.

Mike

If it's of any use, QB utilities I wrote 20+ years ago work
on Virtual PC 2007 inside XP, running DOS 6.22.
Serial/Parallel port accesses no problems, so far.
You need to have parallel/serial port card(s), of course.

I use PowerBasic, Liberty Basic and FreeBasic regularly.
I just tried QBASIC.EXE on the command line under Vista. No problem.
Visual Basic 6 can't be used under Vista because of security
problems. Same for VC++ v. 6.

Actually, VB6 is the only part of Visual Studio 6 that *does* work under
Vista. I use it all the time to maintain some older programs.

How did you get it installed?
When I tried, Vista stopped the installation and told me VB6 was
incompatible with Vista.

Sorry, I don't remember the details of the installation (although I think it
"just worked") However, you should be sure to find the VB6.EXE executable
at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\VB98\VB6.EXE
right click on it, select Properties, then the Compatibility tab and check
"Disable desktop composition". If you don't do this, you will have problems
with the VB form editor.
