'Tristate a Port?'

Hey all,
The EASY PIC'N book says that the TRIS instruction "transfers the
contents
of the W register into the TRIS register which selects port data
direction.
Is that all that the TRIS instruction does is determine data direction
or
Can the TRIS instruction actually tristate the port? I mean can it make
the port have theoretically infinite resistance to whatever it may be
connected to?
Sometimes I want to sink current, other times I would like to source and
then there are times I want it to act as if it were disconnected from
the
rest of the circuit, any advise on if this is possible and how I could
do that?
Thanks,
Ken Dougal
