Does anybody know why I get the following when trying to compile in
windows 3.11. before the following is shown in a window, mplab opens
a minimized doss box which has nothing inside.

{

Building DOL_HS_S.HEX...

Compiling dol_hs_s.asm:
Command line: "C:\MPLAB\MPASMWIN.EXE /p16C84 /aINHX8M /e+ /l+ /q
C:\PIC2\dol_hs_s.asm" This program requires Microsoft Windows.

MPLAB is unable to find output file "DOL_HS_S.HEX".

Build failed.
}

Well, the reason the message is happening is because there is a program in
the DOS box trying to execute a windows program. This does not get trapped
by windows and executed in the dos box.

Not having 3.4 yet (waiting till tonight so its cheaper to download) I can't
suggest anything apart from switching the assembler to the MPASM for DOS.

*pure conjecture section*
What it could be is that this was only tested on Windows 95 (lets hope not).
And I'm pretty sure that on 95 and nt, a DOS app CAN execute a windows app
by internally sending a message to the subsystem. ( I have done this to get
around a bug in 95, but I was executing a 32 bit console app from a 16 bit
app and capturing the console output)

If you can tell from the above statement I am a Win32/C++/MFC programmer
through and through, just messing around with PICs for fun. Although I have
trouble adjusting from my current app ( working set 5.5meg, 182K exe, 3 meg
of DLLs, 100% CPU time on a 333/128mb ) to the relatively high power (hah!)
of a 16C77 (396 bytes ram, 8K rom)

BTW is there a filespec for creating object modules for use with MPLINK? I
quite fancy having a go at writing a compiler, seeing as all the other are
terrible :-)

Isn't that Samaritans? :-)

Don't use MPASMWIN.EXE as a language tool from MPLAB v3.40.  Use MPASM.EXE.

An unrelated question : Is it (at all) possible to display a bit by some symbolic name?
My guess is that the COD-format won't allow for it, but is it possible to name
a few flags by real names in a watch window? For instance "Ack_Error" instead
of "Error_Flags:0"
