Ok.  I've been working with this one 16c84 for 200 cycles of build
->download ->place in circuit ->test.  My question is how many times can you
rewrite the eeprom program memory?  I'm having great results and learning
alot, then POOF, nothing works. Not even my first piece of pic code that
simply turns an ouput on.  Is it me, or do I need a new PIC?

Nominally listed at 100. Someone on the list tested at over 1000.

I guess you're par for the course.

Probably need another one..

Brad,
If you can download (and I assume read back and verify) your code, the PIC
appears to function OK.   Sounds like some external problem to me.
Have you checked for clock signals (osc1+2) and correct power supply
voltages on the PIC?
You should be able to crash and burn the 16C84 codespace some 1000 times
without problems assuming a new device was used initially.

will give you an idea of how many times you can program an 84.

Hi,

I had some similar problems. It was nothing to do with the PIC memory, I
just hadn't tied the MCLR pin up properly so it wasn't coming out of reset
reliably. If the EEPROM verifies correctly (at the voltage you're running it
on) it's ok and you should look at the rest of your board.

Just my thoughts,

Keith.

I too had a similar problem that was board related.  I thought I had fried
the chip but found out that I had a wire that had come off.  Big relief but
took lots of time to find.

You want big relief?  I accidentally plugged an 84 in backwards, into the
programmer!  So not only were the poor little pic's power lines were
reversed, but RB7 had Vpp applied to it.  Hmm, the programmer (PIP-02) said
programming failed, so I tried it again.  And again.  Then I found that it
was in backwards so I pulled it out to turn it around and it was a wee bit
warm.

It wouldn't program anymore.  (I figured that the RB7 pin circuitry might
be blown.)  It didn't work for the next few days so I used one of my other
84s.  But about a week later, I thought I'd try it once more before I threw
it out, and it worked just fine!  I guess it just needed a little R&R :)
