I thought of using the Philips FQ916 as a general purpose front end for receiving almost everything in the UHF/VHF bands. TV audio/video of course, but with secondary circuitry you might pick out amateur radio, weather satellites, pagers, packet radio...? Neatly avoids all that black magic RF design/construction, and dirt cheap too!
