Unitrode makes two IC's designed specifically for charging lead-acid
batteries: the UC3904 and the UC3906.
The data sheets for these are available at:
http://www.unitrode.com/sect-6/uc3906.pdf
and
http://www.unitrode.com/sect-6/uc3909.pdf
They've got a few apnotes on these as well, unfortunately they're
not on line.
If you just want to scope Unitrode then check out:

PS Bryan, do you have my unitoad data book?
