David drying the dishes about 1952. Dorothy washed and David dried. (Note the holster at David's waist; he was probably playing outside before coming in to help with the dishes.) He and Jim took turns drying, and 10 years later Glen dried. To make it more interesting, Dorothy usually gave mental exercises while doing the dishes. For example, she took turns asking the boys to name the presidents in order or do chained calculations that she made up them to do in their heads. (E.g., start with 7; multiply it by 3; subtract 8; multiply it by 2; and what's the answer.)

This picture was probably taken on the front steps of Grandma Crammond’s house in Lansing. [Glen] hadn’t been born yet, and Dave and Jim were around 9 and 11. {Dorothy on the left, Grandma Crammond right, Dave center top, and Jim front}

David and Jim taken in the summer of 1941 by height markers on the garage. You can see that Jim had reached 4 ft. tall and David was about 3’ 5-1/2” tall.

David taken in the summer of 1941, judging from his fancy coat, it might have been taken on his 4th birthday.

Dave is checking the base plate to the top plate on being parallel from one to the other. Checking hinge-pin--45 degree angle on the 5" sine, permanent magnet. This 5 inch permanent single-angle sine sells for approximately $450. He is working on a black granite surface plate. The surface of this plate is .00005 level.

From David's brother Glen:

David enjoyed boating all his life. With the help of our neighbor, Russ Brown, he built a pram when he was 12-13 years old.

Next, he built a cabin on a 14-ft. Freeland steel boat. It had a Mercury motor. I remember him working on that in the garage and in the driveway between our house and Browns’.

Then he bought a 25-ft double-ender, a Lake Michigan rescue boat. He kept it just one summer, then traded it in.

Then he bought a 1931 23-ft Chris Craft and spent a lot of time fixing it up. It was mahogany, double planked, very solid. He converted it to a square rigger (sailboat) for a couple of summers. It had no keel, so you couldn’t tack with it.

He traded it in on a 25-foot Owens cabin cruiser. Later, he found that the people who had the Chris Craft stripped the hardware and motor and sank the boat, because they couldn’t sell it. If Dave had known, he would have made them an offer of $300 for it.

As of 2003, he had a 19-ft lightning class sailboat. It has a centerboard you raise and put down. Once he and Davey were sailing on it when the wind came up and they had to pull into an inlet for safety because the waves were high.

Dave also had a Thompson, which he bought in Hesperia - a 17-foot 1957 model with a 75-hp Evinrude motor; both boat and motor were in mint condition. This boat listed for $700 in 1957. To appreciate that figure, consider that $1800 could buy a Chevy Impala that year.

Mom, Dad, and I - and sometimes some of my high school friends - enjoyed the river cruises Dave took us on, up and down the Muskegon River.
